Abstract

In response to the recognized urgent global public health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the cause of drug-resistant infections, art-science activities are increasingly utilised as public engagement (PE) and public outreach (PO) tools to increase microbiology literacy. Though AMR art-science activities aim to increase public awareness, research evaluating the platform as one conducive to the aims of AMR engagement, including long-term behavioural change, is lacking. The aim of this research study is to explore interactive art-science activities aiming to promote microbiology literacy in AMR. Existing activities lack critical evaluation, and development details are not shared with wider audiences. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic introduced a global shift to online platforms, driving the necessity to reevaluate current PE/PO methods and integrate interactive tools. Two AMR SciArt activities exploring gamification and interactive fiction are described and analysed as case studies. Both were informed by the existing research and evidence-based theories in this chapter, and operated in pre- and post- SARS-CoV-2 pandemic limitations. These activities' methods show promise, however, the most effective strategy in AMR PE is yet to be defined. By establishing a standardised framework and sharing evaluated activities based on evidence-based learning research, more work can be done to inform and strengthen future activities.
